Zadra pounds 16 kills to help Lightning move past first round in Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

NEWPORT COAST — Senior outside hitter Chris Zadra finished with 16 kills, eight service aces and seven digs in the Lightning's 25-12, 25-21, 25-11 victory in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs on Tuesday.

Kent Kawaguchi had 40 assists and five kills for Sage Hill (19-9).

The Lightning advance to Thursday's second-round match and will play the winner between Garden Grove and Crossroads of Santa Monica.

NEWPORT BEACH — Sage Hill senior Robbe Simon earned a "triple bagel" at No. 1 singles for the Lightning in the wildcard CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoff match Tuesday at The Tennis Club.

Alex Manolakas and Eric Magliarditi swept at No. 1 doubles for Sage Hill (9-10), while Denis Cirit and Sam Sherman swept at No. 2 doubles.

The Lightning play at Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos, the Baseline League champion, in the first round Wednesday at 3 p.m.

BASEBALL

Estancia 18, Costa Mesa 0

COSTA MESA — The Eagles won the Battle for the Bell and clinched second place in the Orange Coast League Tuesday at Estancia.

Pitcher Steven Macias (8-2) produced five scoreless innings, striking out eight and allowing four hits for Estancia (16-8, 11-3 in league).

Costa Mesa is 4-19, 2-12.

At the plate, Macias went two for four with three runs batted in, a run and a stolen base.

Tyler Rios (five for five, two RBIs, double, two stolen bases), Ben Beck (three for four, three runs, RBI, double), Alex Trancoso (three for four, three runs, two RBIs, triple, stolen base), Brodie Pearce (two for three, RBI), Andres Hernandez (two for three, 3 RBIs), Sho Watanabe (two for four, two run, doubles), Johnathan Ball (one for one, two RBIs, double) and Jason Rodriguez (one for three, RBI, run, triple) contributed for the Eagles.

Estancia will try to sweep the Mustangs Thursday at 3:15 p.m. at Costa Mesa.

Corona del Mar 9, University 5

CORONA DEL MAR — Stanford-bound senior Andrew McCormack helped lead the Sea Kings to the win over the Trojans, who entered tied for first place in the Pacific Coast League Tuesday.

McCormack improved to 5-2 after his complete-game five-hitter that included five strikeouts. At the plate, he went two for four with a double.

Brett Thompson (three for four, run batted in, double), Brent Lawson (two for four with three RBIs, home run) and Max Stone (three for four, three RBIs) also contributed for CdM (15-10, 8-6 in league).

The Sea Kings close out the regular season at University Thursday at 3:15 p.m.
