CdM, Newport reach O.C. Championships final

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Corona del Mar High won three matches Saturday at Edison High to advance to Monday night's Gold Division championship match.

The Sea Kings (9-3) will face Back Bay rival Newport Harbor in the Gold Division title match at 7 p.m. Monday at Edison.

"I thought we definitely played with the most purpose we've played with all year," CdM Coach Steve Conti said of Saturday's matches.

CdM got past Dana Hills, 25-17, 25-20, in a semifinal. Jack Reed had nine kills and five blocks, while Parker Brown had eight kills and two blocks. Joey Martino and Xan Yelich each had four kills.

Previously the Sea Kings topped Tesoro, 25-16, 25-13, in a quarterfinal. Brown had 14 kills, Reed added eight and Remy Lamons had five kills, a block and two service aces. Joe Ctvrtlik dished out 21 assists.

CdM also defeated El Dorado, 25-23, 28-26, in its final Division I pool-play match Saturday morning. Reed had 10 kills, and Lamons nine. Martino had seven kills, Yelich added five and Ctvrtlik had 21 assists.

Conti said Brown played libero in the El Dorado match after suffering a bone contusion just below the knee Friday against Foothill. However, Brown was back to outside hitter for CdM's final two matches of the day.

Orange County Championships

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High also swept its three matches Saturday at Edison, earning its way into the Gold Division title match against rival Corona del Mar on Monday night.

The Sailors (9-4) defeated Laguna Beach, 27-25, 25-17, in a Gold Division semifinal match. Clay Carr led the Sailors with 10 kills, Kevin Rakestraw added nine and Pierce Ward had five. Connor Leggett dished out 24 assists, and Nick Sargent and Max Richley had eight digs each.

Earlier Saturday, Newport Harbor outlasted Orange Lutheran in a quarterfinal match, 25-22, 28-30, 15-12. Carr and Rakestraw had 15 kills each for the Sailors, and Leggett had 35 assists.

The Sailors also defeated San Juan Hills, 25-15, 25-19, in their final Division I pool-play match. Ward had seven kills for Newport Harbor, and Richley added six digs.

"We're still figuring things out," Newport assistant Coach Taylor Govaars said. "But we're playing really hard, which is good. Today I thought we got better every match."
