FRESNO — Allison Burns sank a jumper with eight seconds left to put the visiting Lions ahead for good in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Burns' bucket put No. 10-ranked VU up, 65-64 and, after FPU missed a shot on the ensuing possession, Vanguard junior Esther Timmermans made two free throws with no time left to widen the margin.

Alison Drennan had 15 points to lead the winners (13-3, 7-1 in conference).

Timmermans had 12 points, while Burns and Paige Halberg added 10 each. Drennan, Halberg, Timmermans and Burns had six rebounds apiece, two fewer than team leader Maree Drennan.

Vanguard posted a 51-36 rebounding advantage.

FPU is 11-9, 3-5.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 77, Fresno Pacific 72

FRESNO — Taylor Kelly scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Kelly hit six of 10 three-point attempts. Christopher Raybon added 18 points and Chris Pynch scored 14 points for Vanguard (12-7, 4-4 in conference).

The Lions were 19 of 19 from the free-throw line.

Fresno Pacific is 12-7, 3-5.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UC San Diego

IRVINE — Senior All-American opposite Carson Clark had 13 kills, hit .600, and three aces to pace the host Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Saturday.

Sophomore outside hitters Jeremy Dejno and Connor Hughes had eight kills apiece to help UCI hit .469 as a team.

Sophomore setter Daniel Stork had 34 assists and four block assists, while senior middle blocker Austin D'Amore had four kills and four block assists for the No. 2-ranked winners (5-2, 1-2 in conference).

UCSD fell to 2-4, 1-2.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Bronco Invitational

NAMPA, Idaho — UC Irvine junior Ericka Nowell was third in the 400 meters to lead the Anteaters in their season opener on Saturday.

Nowell finished in 58.59 seconds. She was also on the 4x400 relay that finished fourth.

UCI's Amber Middleton was seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.83 while Marie Brashears finished seventh in the 800 meters in 2:23.37.

Sanmisola George was 10th in the 60 meters in 7.95 for UCI.
