Jan. 2 school day an oversight, official says

November 03, 2011

CORONA DEL MAR — Parents at a recent Corona Del Mar High School PTA meeting expressed concern that Newport-Mesa Unified schools will be open Jan. 2, a federal holiday.

Addressing Supt. Jeffrey Hubbard at a meeting in the school library Wednesday, parents asked Hubbard whether their children should attend school. They were concerned teachers may see low attendance, play movies or use the day for a surprise quiz.

Hubbard told parents the district plans the school calendar about three years in advance and that the holiday was an oversight.

By the time the district spotted the mistake, it was too late to reverse it without reducing classroom hours, he said.

New Year's Day falls on a Sunday in 2012, pushing the holiday to Jan. 1 for government agencies and many private employers.

Corona del Mar High School Principal Tim Bryan assured parents that the day would not be wasted, and any crucial quizzes or tests could be made up on a later date by students who are traveling or unable to attend school Jan. 2.

District spokeswoman Laura Boss said a calendar committee of school and parent representatives decided on the date at a previous meeting.

Parents who are concerned about the school date should contact their child's school principal directly, she said.
