History is being made in Orange County, but it is the wrong kind of history, thanks to Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas. The prosecution of 11 Muslim students for interrupting a speech by Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren at UC Irvine sends the wrong message.
These students had a legitimate reason to protest. Oren had a direct role in the military attacks on Gaza almost three years ago. During that attack Israeli Defense Forces massacred 1,400 defenseless Palestinians. Close to 400 of them were children.
These students — as a matter of conscience — had a moral obligation to protest Oren's military role in the Gaza attack. But it seems that in the process they violated an unwritten cardinal law in the land of the free: "Thou shall not speak critically of the state of Israel, or its representatives." When it comes to Israel, constitutional rights are suspended.
