Writing contest open to teens

The Newport Beach Public Library Foundation is accepting entries for its annual high school creative writing contest, Library Lit '11.

The contest is open to Newport Beach Library card holders ages 14 to 18, who attend, or are going to attend, high school.

The first-place prize is $250, and the winning short story will be published in "The BookMark," the foundation's quarterly publication.

Runners up will have their work published on the foundation's website.

All entries should be 2,500 words or less, and be set in a library or have a library-themed element.

Stories should be typed in Microsoft Word and include: a cover letter with author's name, address, phone number, email address, word count and story title; a title page with no biographical information; and all pages should be numbered.

The author's name should only appear on the cover letter.

Submissions should be emailed to tkeys@newportbeachca.gov by 5 p.m. Sept. 1. The winners will be announced on or before Oct. 1.
