The Newport Beach Police Department is looking for residents interested in joining its Citizens' Academy.
The free program is designed to increase awareness about departmental operations, said police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.
Department personnel will share their expertise in SWAT, K-9, narcotics, patrol operations, traffic laws and firearms, Lowe said.
Applicants must work or live in Newport Beach, be 21 or older, and without felony convictions, arrest warrants or pending litigation.
Those taking part in the 12-week program will go on a police ride-along, participate in practical demonstrations and receive an academy T-shirt. The academy meets from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays Sept. 15 to Dec. 1.
