High School Roundup: Davenport runner-up in league

CdM junior takes second in Pacific Coast League finals for boys' golf.

Pacific Coast League finals

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Corona del Mar High junior John Davenport shot one-under-par 71 Tuesday to earn a share of the lead, but lost on the second playoff hole to finish second to Beckman's Kevin Lee in the 36-hole tournament at Mile Square Golf Course.

Davenport's two-day total was 146.

CdM's Tanner Trauthen (148) finished fourth and will join Davenport at the CIF individual championships, May 16 at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.


Two-time defending league individual champion Mike Moorhead and Karick Brown (both 152 to tie for eighth) and Brian Mull (153 for 11th) did not advance.


Academy League Finals

LAGUNA NIGUEL — Sage Hill's Ahmed Eltamami shot an 85 on the par-72 course at El Niguel Country Club to finish sixth Tuesday.

Eltamami (83-85—168) earned first-team all-league status.

Jared Hoffman (82-88—170), who was eighth, Kam Fujii (86-90—176), who was ninth, Tanner Tremaine (86-93—179), who was 10th, and Matt Marlin (86-100—186), who was 12th, each earned second-team all-league recognition for the Lightning.

Sage Hill will compete in the CIF Team Divisionals at Talega May 10. The CIF Southern Section will honor the Lightning golfers as Academic Team Champions in a pre-game ceremony at Angel Stadium before Monday's game against Toronto.


Newport Harbor 195, Huntington Beach 206

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Marcus Kiel shot two-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors for the visiting Sailors in the Sunset League finale at SeaCliff Country Club on Tuesday.

Zach Eddy (38), Carter Norris (40), Brad Tapfer (41) and Eli Gomez (42) also scored for the Tars (13-9, 7-3 in league) who finish third and advance to the CIF Central Regional, Coach Scott Tarnow said.



Newport Harbor def. Fountain Valley

NEWPORT BEACH – Seniors Cody Caldwell (17 kills and seven digs) and Rusty Sary (10 kills and three digs) led the Sailors to a 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 Sunset League win on senior night Tuesday.

Senior Ian Sequeira had 28 assists and five digs, while sophomore Kevin Rakestraw had four kills and junior Connor Leggett had three aces for Newport Harbor (21-7, 9-0 in league).



Laguna Beach 3, Costa Mesa 2

LAGUNA BEACH — Junior Marcus Hayes went two for two with runs batted in for the Mustangs on Tuesday, but the Breakers clinched the Orange Coast League title, their first league crown in 48 years.
