College Roundup: UCI men's tennis wins Big West regular-season title

UC Irvine 5, Cal Poly 2

SAN LUIS OBISPO — No. 1 singles player Chris Kearney was one of five Anteaters to win in singles to help UCI win the Big West Conference regular-season title Saturday.

Sam Gould (No. 2), Fabian Matthews (No. 3), Shan Sondhu (No. 5) and Steven Henderson (No. 6) also won in singles for the Anteaters (17-6, 5-0 in conference).

Cal Poly (14-5) grabbed the No. 2 seed, finishing 4-1 in league.

UCI is the top seed in the Big West Conference Championships, which start Friday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD

O.C. Dual

FULLERTON — Cal State Fullerton beat UC Irvine, 78-68, Saturday evening.

UCI won nine events, led by senior Matt Lahti with two first-place showings. Lahti won the hammer throw with a season-best mark of 195 feet, 7inches and the discus throw at 150-2.

Thomas Hamm earned first in the pole vault with a mark of 16-1 ¼ to rank ninth in the UCI career record book.

Chris Carson won the 200 meters in a season-best 21.87, Charles Jock was first in the 400 (47.58), Sam Hyams captured the 800 in a season-best 1:52.20 and Rex Nelson placed first in the 1500 (3:56.48), also a season-best for him.

Mike Kennedy was first in the long jump at 21-0 ½ and UCI's 4x400 relay of Napoleon Greene, Dominic Jester, Cam Mitchell and P.J. Jong finished first with a time of 3:20.05.

Orange Empire Conference Championships

RIVERSIDE — Orange Coast College's Jake Dawson, a Newport Harbor High product, won the 10,000 meters in 32 minutes, 38.68 seconds, leading a 1-2-3 sweep for the Pirates Friday at Riverside College.

Some events had preliminary competition, while others were finals.

OCC's Patrick Douglas finished second in the 10,000 in 33:17.39 and Arthur Tang was third in 33:23.40.

Pat Baker won two events in the decathlon, taking first in the 400 in 52.25 and the 1,500 in 4:40.85.

Barron Maizland won the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:58.99.

Rich Nelson won the shot put (46 feet, 6 inches).

Andrew Cruikshank won two events in the decathlon, taking first in the shot put (38-3 ½) and the discus (113-5).

OCC is in second with 93 points, behind host Riverside, which has 113 points.

The OEC Championships conclude Friday at Riverside College.

FULLERTON — UC Irvine defeated Cal State Fullerton, 97-52, Saturday night at the Titan Track Complex.
