Adam Kennedy charged for Jan. 26 DUI arrest in Newport

The Orange County district attorney's office charged Adam Kennedy, the former Angel second baseman who starred on the Halos' 2002 World Series championship team, with two counts of driving under the influence in Newport Beach.

On Jan. 26, the California Highway Patrol stopped Kennedy, 35, now with the Seattle Mariners, as he was driving north on the 73 tollway in Newport, authorities said.

The baseball player was suspected of being under the influence and arrested minutes later. He was then turned over to the Orange County Sheriff's Department and booked at Men's Central Jail.

According to the complaint, Kennedy is charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of driving with a blood alcohol level of .08% or more, the district attorney's office said Wednesday.

Both charges are misdemeanors. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 21.

Kennedy, who is from Riverside, played for the Angels between 2000 and 2006. He was considered a key player in their 2002 World Series victory. In 2007, he returned to his first big league team, the St. Louis Cardinals, before doing stints with the Oakland Athletics in 2009 and the Washington Nationals in 2010.

He signed with the Mariners in January.
