Big Canyon to host rehab, recovery nonprofit's fundraiser

With help from an anonymous donor, a local nonprofit organization aims to bring in $200,000 in donations at an annual fundraiser, said an event official Wednesday.

The Circle of Life Breakfast, the biggest fundraiser of the year for New Directions for Women — a Costa Mesa group that provides rehab and recovery services to women — is scheduled for March 28 at the Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach.

Last year, the event netted about $80,000.

This year, an anonymous donor has pledged to match contributions dollar-for-dollar, said Becky Flood, the organization's chief executive officer.

The fundraiser, whose name highlights the generations of women of have volunteered their time over the years since New Directions' inception in 1977, will honor local community members and volunteers.

The Amethyst Society recognition for those who have given "sustaining substantial support" will be awarded to 21 people and supporting organizations this year, Flood said.

Among those recognized will be Costa Mesa resident Sally Frey, who at 25 years of service to the organization is the longest serving board member, Dana Point resident Faith Strong for providing 35 years of support, and Dan and Allison Carracino of Laguna Beach for providing other significant support, Flood said.

"It takes special people who are willing to share their time, talent and treasure in order to improve the lives of other human beings," Flood said.
