Aquatics center at CdM High School needs funds for new locker room

March 02, 2011

Newport Beach officials and school boosters are raising funds for another round of renovations at the Marian Bergeson Aquatics Center. The swimming facility at the Corona del Mar High School campus has a remodeled pool and pool deck, after roughly $1.4 million in repairs since 2005.

But the locker rooms are in relatively bad shape, and a foundation is campaigning to raise between $600,000 and $1 million to build a new locker room building. The aquatics facility, originally opened in 1990, is funded by a joint-use agreement between Newport-Mesa Unified School District and the city of Newport Beach, which runs recreation programs there.

Also, the CdM Community Aquatics Facilities Foundation, a group of youth sports parent boosters, has contributed funds to the renovations.

Last week Councilwoman Leslie Daigle asked the city manager to seek funds to cover Newport Beach's contribution.

"It's a community asset," she said.
