CORONA — It's been more than a decade since Newport Harbor High has had a CIF champion in wrestling. But senior Bradley Beaudette ended the drought Saturday at Roosevelt High.
Beaudette (32-9) won the 189-pound weight class championship at the CIF Southern Section Inland Division tournament. He became the first CIF champion in Dominic Bulone's 12 years as Newport Harbor coach.
Beaudette, the Sunset League champion, beat Jordan Bixler of Redlands East Valley, 5-0, in the title match.
"It was awesome," Beaudette said of becoming a CIF champ. "Greatest feeling in the world, just to be on top of the podium."
Beaudette, who went 4-0 in the two-day tournament, edged Raymond Sanchez of A.B. Miller, 4-3, in the semifinals.
"He was really aggressive and confident the whole weekend," Bulone said of Beaudette. "Even when he got a little bit of a lead he didn't sit back. He just kept going."
