High School Roundup: Sage Hill advances

NEWPORT BEACH – Liana Korber won both of her No. 1 singles sets before getting pulled as the Lightning won in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs at The Tennis Club Thursday.

Sage Hill (16-6) plays the winner of Long Beach Poly and Malibu on Saturday.

Corona del Mar 15, Tesoro 3

CORONA DEL MAR — Corona del Mar won eight of nine doubles sets to post a first-round victory in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs Thursday.

Senior Lynda Xepoleas swept three singles sets for the Sea Kings. Coach Brian Ricker said sophomore Nini Ugrelidze's 6-3 singles victory of Tesoro's Macy Jones in the second round was also big, as was freshman Lauren Thaxter's 6-0 victory against Tesoro's No. 2 player.

The Sea Kings (14-5) play Troy in the second round Saturday at 2 p.m. The site will be determined via coin flip.

Newport Harbor 17, Esperanza 1

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Lauren Conway and freshman Natalie Cernius both swept in singles as the Sailors rolled Thursday in their first-round CIF Southern Section Division II playoff match.

Conway and Cernius only dropped a combined five games for the top-seeded Tars (18-2). The doubles teams of Ricki Archie and Christina Young, as well as Megan Bathen and Mindy Wheeler, both won twice before being subbed out.

Newport Harbor plays Saturday against the winner of Mission Viejo and Flintridge Prep.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Ontario def. Sage Hill

ONTARIO —Zoe Kreitenberg had 18 kills, seven blocks and two aces for the Lightning in the CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA second-round match Thursday night.

Ontario won, 25-21, 25-27, 25-23, 20-25, 17-15.

Natasha Sakraney had 12 kills and 14 digs, Maggie Danner had 10 kills, four aces and five digs for Sage Hill (12-13). Alayna Lewis had 30 assists and Brenna Van Hoogenstyn had nine digs and two aces.

The Lightning led, 11-8, in the fifth set and also had match point at 14-13.

"We got off to a slow start and against good teams it's tough to dig out of a hole," Sage Coach Dan Thomassen said.
