Community & Clubs: New officers installed

On Oct. 10, the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa installed the officers for the 2010-11 fiscal year. The new officers are Ken Dilley, president; Charles Markel, vice president; Rhea Leigh Graf, treasurer; and Bill Lowe, secretary. The incoming Board of Directors will include President Ken Dilley and members James Bonar, Brigide Daily, Gregory Dennis, Jon Dilley, Jeff Dimsdale, Rhea Leigh Graf, Steve Grant, Buzz Kostlan, Bill Lowe, Charles Markel, Kent Mueller, Joe Panarisi, Jim Schabarum, Don Stevens, and Fran Ursini. The installation was conducted by Division Lt. Gov.Jim Bonar, also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa.

The Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa meets at noon every Thursday for lunch at the Costa Mesa Country Club Clubhouse, 1701 Golf Course Drive. The meetings, which include interesting speakers from the community and local service organizations, recognize outstanding students from Estancia and Costa Mesa High Schools, and local elementary schools. The Costa Mesa club sponsors the Key Clubs at Estancia High School and Costa Mesa High School and the Circle K Club at Orange Coast College. The purpose of Kiwanis and its programs is to "change the one child and one community at a time."

Costa Mesa Historical Society History Program

On Sunday, at 1870 Anaheim Ave., the Costa Mesa Historical Society will present Gordon Bricken, author of the book "Pioneers in Blue and Gray: Civil War Veterans in Orange County." Mr. Bricken will discuss how thousands of Civil War veterans, from both sides, moved west after the war and many of those found their way to what became Orange County. Gordon will further reveal how these veterans were involved in the formative years of Orange County and left their mark in name and deed and will relate the individual stories of those now buried here.
