Community & Clubs: Delegates to receive medals, certificates

Ten Boys State delegates will be awarded their official Boys State medallion and certificate of participation at the American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291. The awards will be presented 7 p.m. Wednesdayat the post's general membership dinner and meeting, according to Jess Lawson, third vice commander. The post is at 215 E. 15th St., Newport Beach.

The post sponsored the delegates to the 73rd session of California Boys State at Cal State Sacramento in June. Delegates are honor students, leaders in athletics, music or other scholastic endeavors, and they represent seven high schools in Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and Irvine.

Boys State is the American Legion's six-day summer program started in 1935 and held each year in every state (except Hawaii). The program promotes government procedures, the electoral process and U.S. Constitution studies. In 2010, 975 delegates participated in Sacramento. One or more was sponsored by nearly every American Legion Post in California.

Oktoberfest at Newport Harbor

The Newport Harbor Elks are hosting Oktoberfest. It will be open to the public starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, at the Elks Lodge, 3456 Via Oporto, Newport Beach. Authentic German food, an oompah band and Bavarian folk dancers will be featured. Call (949) 673-6110 for more information.

Resources for the homeless and hungry

The Oct. 20 meeting of the Newport-Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council will focus on "Resources for the Homeless and Hungry," said Greg Kelley, the council's program co-chairman. Clergy, staff and volunteers from congregations and nonprofits that help homeless and hungry people are invited to attend October's general membership meeting. Agencies that provide services such as housing, food, medical and dental will share what they offer and how congregations can refer the homeless and hungry to them.

Invited agencies include Families Forward, Laura's House, Lutheran Social Services. Mercy House, Orange County Rescue Mission, Orange County Community Housing, Share Our Selves, Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, South County Outreach, Women's Transitional Living Center and US VETS.
