The nomination signing event was followed this week with a Tuesday evening bay cruise on The Catalina Flyer, attracting a sold-out boat of community well-wishers launching Rush Hill's campaign.
Civic pride is heavy on the mind of Balboa Bay Club hotelier Henry Schielein, who plans to raise significant dollars next week at his 16th annual Gentleman's Smoker and Lobster Clambake.
The July 30 men's dinner on the beach at The Balboa Bay Club helps fund the 1221 Scholarship Fund, which awards college grants annually to deserving Newport-Mesa students.
More than $500,000 has been awarded to date, thanks in part to the generosity of local gents attending the event each year wearing their obligatory navy blue blazers.
This year, former football star Anthony Davis will be on hand for the evening, which is being videotaped for broadcast by PBS TV station executive Mitchell Sussman and his Raven TV Production Co. One of the highlights of the evening is Schielein's libation and luxury travel auction featuring some of the most spectacular prizes offered on the California Riviera's charity circuit.
Last-minute tickets are still available and priced at $275 per person. Please call (949) 630-4201 to make a reservation and support The 1221 Scholarship Fund.
On July 31, an organization know as ACT Today ( Autism Care and Treatment Today) will be hosting a food and wine tasting evening in Newport Beach at a private residence.
What makes this wine evening even more important is that it is being produced to assist military families with autistic children in need of medical care and therapy who are not covered by standard government health insurance.
ACT Today is dedicated, in part, to assisting military families with grants that are seriously needed.
Youngs Market will sponsor 25 wineries joining restaurants that include The Arches, The Newport Rib Co., Haute Cakes, Blue Water Grill and Z Pizza. Local entertainer Mark Wood will entertain.
Tickets are $100.Please visit http://www.acttodayformilitaryfamilies.org or call Laura Marroquin at (714) 596-4431.
THE CROWD runs Thursdays and Saturdays. B.W. Cook is editor of the Bay Window, the official publication of the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach.
