UC Irvine 4, Long Beach State 2 LONG BEACH — Senior Eric Pettis threw a complete game to lead the Anteaters to a series sweep of the host 49ers in Big West Conference play Sunday at Blair Field.

Pettis, who did not allow an earned run, improved to 9-3 as UCI (37-19, 17-7 in conference) completed its regular season by notching its seventh straight win over the Dirtbags.

Sophomore outfielder Jordan Fox went two for five with two runs batted in for the winners, who were bolstered by two hits from senior first baseman Jeff Cusick and sophomore catcher Ronnie Shaeffer.

Pettis, who tossed his second consecutive complete game, allowed nine hits, walked one and struck out six. He threw 111 pitches.

It was the 11th straight conference loss for Long Beach State (23-32, 7-17), which finishes last in the Big West.

It was the final game for 49ers Coach Mike Weathers, who retires after nine seasons at the helm.

Team national championship MADISON, Wis. — Junior skipper Michael Menninger, a Newport Beach resident, helped St. Mary's College of Maryland win the Intercollegiate Sailing Assn. team race championship, completed Monday on Lake Mendota.

Menninger, a skipper of three two-person boats that all contributed to their school's fifth national title, helped St. Mary's edge Boston College by virtue of a tiebreaker.

Boston College edged St. Mary's on a tiebreaker at last year's event.

Menninger helped St. Mary's go 6-0 in group competition, before advancing to the elite eight, then the final four. Four finalists vie for the title in a head-to-head, round-robin format.

Menninger teamed with crew Kelly Wilbur.
