The main event

For many, Memorial Day means a chance to grab a discount sofa or bedroom set, so we'll focus this week's O.C. Bargainista column on that which can be sat on, run over or hung from a ceiling or wall.

Try a new shade

Would-be painters can visit glidden.com Tuesday to sign up for their choice of two free paint testers with enough paint to cover 3 square feet (and a nifty brush added to the lid). Registrants also will be able to give two testers to a friend.

Interior warehouse gives big discount

The famous von Hemert Interiors' Warehouse Sale will run through Monday, and features up to 80% off fine furnishings. There are stores at 1595 Newport Blvd. in Costa Mesa and at 345 N. Coast Hwy. in Laguna Beach. For information, visit vonhemertinteriors.com.

Remodel on the cheap

Those planning home improvement projects this weekend should scoot over to the Home Improvement Outlet, 23351 Avenida de la Carlota, Laguna Hills, where a bounty of donated goods from companies like Home Depot await (at fat discounts).

They're planning a Memorial Day Weekend Sale that features bath, kitchen and garage cabinets for 75% off the outlet price; headboards for $25 and up; bathroom vanities starting at $25; a sandalwood kitchen cabinet set with more than 30 linear feet of cabinets for $1,000; and water-saving toilets for $199 that retail at Lowe's for $463.

The store is set on Furniture Row, where retailers will be celebrating the weekend with food, music and more. For information, call (949) 421-3800 or visit materialsmatter.org.

Habitat keeps on giving (discounts)

Another source for home improvers is the pair of Habitat for Humanity ReStores that also feature donated overstock and used housing supplies, décor and appliances, at 2200 S. Ritchey St. in Santa Ana and 12827 Harbor Blvd. in Garden Grove.

Specials include a $99.95 patio table and chair set; a $75 dining table with four chairs; and a $200 sofa bed. For information, visit habitatoc.org.

Deep discounts for minor dings

Seeking a major appliance for a minor price? Consider the Sears Outlet locations at 500 W. Warner Ave., Santa Ana, and 2335 E. Imperial Hwy., Brea.

They routinely offer discounts like 50% off all washing machines or 40% off all dishwashers; deals change weekly, but the prices are always outstanding (usually in exchange for minor scratches and dents). Small home goods, barbecues and fitness equipment are often for sale as well.

Memorial Day specials were not available as of press time, but previous deals included 50% off refrigerators and fitness equipment; a $34.95 flash memory camcorder and a $7.99 wet-dry vacuum.
