Costa Mesa Councilwoman Wendy Leece has announced her intention to run for reelection.
Leece, who is seeking a second term, so far is unopposed in the November contest. The deadline to file paperwork is Aug. 6.
A private reception was held for Leece on Wednesday at Onotria Wine Country Cuisine restaurant in Costa Mesa. About 35 supporters attended, including Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach and Costa Mesa Mayor Allan Mansoor.
“This is a great city and now that my kids are grown, I’m enjoying giving backing to my city and working on projects that will make our city better,” said Leece, 61.
Leece’s said her priorities are to keep Costa Mesa safe and find ways to attract more businesses.
She also stands by the city’s efforts to dissuade illegal immigrants from entering the city.
“We have for the moment identified 1,300 illegal alien criminals,” she said. “Our city is safer because I think people who are not here illegally would be discouraged from doing any crimes because they know that if they are committing crimes that ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] would get involved. It’s a deterrent. We are deterring crimes in Costa Mesa.”
Leece is a substitute teacher who’s lived in Costa Mesa for 40 years. She generally opposes heavy government regulation of businesses.
Aside from working on balancing the city’s budget and preserving the Orange County Fairgrounds, Leece has been involved with the Costa Mesa Library Foundation, which is looking to raise funds for a new central library. She is also working with the Chamber of Commerce and city staff to find ways to invite more businesses to the city, she said.
