Costa Mesa United began its quest of building and improving athletic facilities when a group of people got together to raise funds for a future stadium and pool complexes for Costa Mesa and Estancia high schools.
But the passage of Measure F, which secured funds for the stadium and pool complexes, allowed Costa Mesa United to concentrate on raising funds to improve the rest of the athletic facilities.
“Costa Mesa is a unique city in that there’s not a lot of parks and facilities separate from the school district,” Johnson said. “There are a lot of playing facilities [in] the school district, and with their budget cuts, it doesn’t allow them to keep up the facilities the way they would like.”
This year, Ed Fawcett, president and chief executive of the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce, was named the 2010 honoree.
“Ed does so many things for the community that go unnoticed,” Johnson said. “He’s always the guy behind the scenes; he’s big on supporting Orange Coast College, CM900, scholarships for local high school kids, and all these things kind of collectively pointed to him as this year’s honoree.”
Another golfing event also raised money for a good cause. The Tommy Bahama’s 11th annual Pacific Coast Classic at the Pelican Hills Golf Club at Newport Coast raised funds for Olive Crest, a nonprofit organization that gives abused, neglected or at-risk children a second chance at a good life. The money raised at the event has not yet been tallied.
