Golf tourney to help youth fields

Nonprofit-organized competition raises funds to build and support athletic fields, event chair says.

Costa Mesa United estimates that it raised about $85,000 from this week’s Mesa Verde Classic Golf Tournament, money that will go toward improving youth athletic facilities, said Rick Kapko, the organization’s treasurer.

An exact figure for the amount raised was not yet available.

The nonprofit organization held its fourth annual golf tournament Monday at the Mesa Verde County Club. About 130 golfers participated in the event, which was followed by auctions and a raffles.

“Last year, we put back in excess of $240,000 toward youth-group facility improvements and plenty of other things,” said Tom Johnson, tournament chairman and former publisher of the Daily Pilot. “There’s a lot to do in the city.”

Costa Mesa United began its quest of building and improving athletic facilities when a group of people got together to raise funds for a future stadium and pool complexes for Costa Mesa and Estancia high schools.

But the passage of Measure F, which secured funds for the stadium and pool complexes, allowed Costa Mesa United to concentrate on raising funds to improve the rest of the athletic facilities.

“Costa Mesa is a unique city in that there’s not a lot of parks and facilities separate from the school district,” Johnson said. “There are a lot of playing facilities [in] the school district, and with their budget cuts, it doesn’t allow them to keep up the facilities the way they would like.”

This year, Ed Fawcett, president and chief executive of the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce, was named the 2010 honoree.

“Ed does so many things for the community that go unnoticed,” Johnson said. “He’s always the guy behind the scenes; he’s big on supporting Orange Coast College, CM900, scholarships for local high school kids, and all these things kind of collectively pointed to him as this year’s honoree.”

Another golfing event also raised money for a good cause. The Tommy Bahama’s 11th annual Pacific Coast Classic at the Pelican Hills Golf Club at Newport Coast raised funds for Olive Crest, a nonprofit organization that gives abused, neglected or at-risk children a second chance at a good life. The money raised at the event has not yet been tallied.
