Captain Roger D. Brown

Captain Roger D. Brown,

longtime Lido Isle resident

and retired Naval aviator,

died April 9, 2010.

Born October 4, 1920

in West Liberty, Iowa,

Roger grew up on a


farm and attended

Coe College on a

football scholarship.

He began his Naval

career as a PBY5A

patrol bomber in the

Aleutian Islands of Alaska

during World War II. He flew

transport planes with wounded soldiers during the

Korean War, was a test pilot and retired with the rank

of captain. Roger was extremely proud of his naval

career and loved telling stories.

Roger married Betty Kelley in 1944 and they

had five children, Betsy Brown, Dale Vasil, Debbie

Christopher, Steve Brown and Jeff Brown. Roger

and Betty moved to the Newport area in 1961 where

Roger enjoyed sailing and playing tennis. Betty died

in 1979.

Roger shared his last 26 years with Allegra

Stoltz on Lido Isle. They shared a love of traveling,

particularly taking ocean cruises, and an active life

through the Lido Isle Yacht Club, the Balboa Bay

Club and the American Legion.

Roger is survived by his brother Darrell

Brown and sister Janet Eden. In addition to five

children, Roger leaves 12 grandchildren, 10 great

grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

A celebration of life is planned for Wednesday,

April 14 from 1-4 p.m. at the Lido Isle Club House.
