Gilchrist shares Player of Year nod

Newport Harbor High senior helped lead Sailors to CIF Division I title game, as well as outright Sunset crown.

Newport Harbor High senior center Kaleigh Gilchrist shared the Sunset League Player of the Year award with Kaley Dodson of Los Alamitos.

Gilchrist led the Sailors (24-6, 5-0 in league) to the league championship and leads a group of five who earned all-league recognition for Newport Harbor.

Gilchrist, bound for USC, led the team in scoring with 94 goals, 46 assists and also contributed 45 steals.

The Sailors, who reached the CIF Southern Section Division I final, had three seniors receive first-team All-Sunset League honors.

They were Kate Klippert, goalie Krissy Burger and Katie Jackson.

Klippert had 57 goals, 26 assists and 43 steals.

Burger had 204 saves and 14 steals.

Jackson had 37 goals, 33 assists and 22 steals.

The Sailors had a senior and a sophomore make the second team.

Senior Colleen McCall finished the season with 33 goals, 18 assists, and 30 steals.

Sophomore Catherine Carpenter had 16 goals, 16 assists and 32 steals.

Eagles, Waldron top picks

Estancia High senior guard Kohl Jones and Costa Mesa senior guard Brian Waldron earned first-team All-Orange Coast League recognition in boys’ basketball.

Estancia senior forward Wes Shaw, and junior forward Davon Joyner were also first-team honorees.

Jones helped the Eagles (15-12, 5-3 in league) to a runner-up finish in league and led the team in scoring with an average of 14.3 points per game.

Waldron, Mustangs ended up last in league with a record of 2-16, 1-7.

Joyner was the second leading scorer on the team averaging 12.2 points per game.

Shaw was the third leading scorer for the Eagles, averaging 10.7 points per game.

The Mustangs’ junior center Andrew Albers received second-team laurels.

Laguna Beach’s Adam Selevan was league MVP.

4 locals on first team

Estancia High junior guard Kassie Stratton led four local players named first-team All-Orange Coast League in girls’ basketball.

Junior guard Yessenia Maldanado also represented Estancia on the first team, while Costa Mesa senior forward Olivia Scheidt and senior center Becky Hunt were also first-team picks.

Stratton led the Eagles (14-13-0, 6-2 in league) in scoring this season, averaging 19 points per game. She helped Estancia finish second in league.

Scheidt led the Mustangs (14-13, 4-4 in league) to a third-place finish in league, as she averaged 16.5 points per game.

Maldanado averaged 5.7 points per game, while Hunt averaged 11 points per game.
