In the opener, Bibona allowed two hits and only one unearned run, while striking out 10 in eight innings. But the Hornets (5-7) posted a run against two relievers in the ninth inning for the win.
Evan Brock walked the bases loaded and the winning run scored on a wild pitch by Andy Lines.
Casey Stevenson homered in the first game for UCI, which closes out the series today at 1 p.m.
Doubleheader
LAKESIDE — Visiting Vanguard allowed 31 runs in two games, but managed a Golden State Athletic Conference split Saturday against San Diego Christian at Stars Field.
Vanguard slugged a 19-17 win in the opener, and fell, 14-4, in Game 2.
Brandon Young went three for four with three doubles, five runs batted in and three runs to pace the Lions (19-3, 10-2 in conference) in the opener.
Eric Krzysiak went three for five with three RBIs and Kip Masuda had two hits and four RBIs for the Lions.
Young was three for three with a run scored in the Lions’ loss.
San Diego Christian is 2-13, 2-10.
SOFTBALL
Doubleheader
AZUSA — Visiting Vanguard won the opening game of the Golden State Athletic Conference twin bill, 2-0, but Azusa Pacific posted a 5-4 win in nine innings in Game 2 on Saturday.
Melissa Forrester tossed a three-hit shutout in the Vanguard win, in which Brittany Parlopino went two for three and Angela St. Croix drove in a run.
Forrester went three for four with two RBIs in the second game for the Lions (14-10, 2-4 in conference), but APU (13-11, 2-4) prevailed.
TRACK AND FIELD
Northridge Invitational
NORTHRIDGE — UC Irvine won the men’s and women’s 4X800-meter relays Saturday night.
Cam Mitchell, Tim Murphy, Colin Hacker and Charles Jock posted a time of 7 minutes, 36.08 seconds in the men’s relay.
Chole Fata, Maggie Newton-Neal, Shelby Pock and Amy Green were the women’s winners (9:24.24).
Vanessa Houston (400 in 56.23), Lauren Collins (5-8 3/4 in the high jump) and Natasha Wardley (18-1 in the long jump) finished second in women’s events.
