“You’re nervous,” Benedict said. “Our department represents the city of Newport Beach.”

NBCC head pro Paul Hahn, who is in the field via a sponsor exemption, made three birdies during Wednesday’s pro-am and said the greens were "rolling so nice."

“[The greens] were a little softer at the end of last week, but they could get really quick by the end of the weekend [barring rain],” Hahn said. "You could control the ball on the green from the fairways."

The pros are in favor of the course.

Champions Tour rookie Paul Azinger, making his debut at the Toshiba Classic, said he enjoys it.

“Well, it’s just fantastic,” Azinger said Wednesday. “One of the most enjoyable golf courses to play day in and day out that you will find anywhere in the whole world.

“It seems a bit short, but I don’t think it plays short because you are sitting here at sea level, it could be a bit cool. You know, if it’s short, that just means guys are hitting wedges. They are just going to shoot lower scores. It doesn’t matter if it’s long or short. It’s the same for everybody. It was a pleasure to play [Tuesday]. I really enjoyed it.”
