COSTA MESA — Center fielder Tyson Leighton went two for three with three runs batted in and a run scored for the Lions in their Golden State Athletic opener Wednesday.

Shortstop Zachary Leighton went two for five with a run for Vanguard (9-1, 1-0 in conference). First baseman William Hamilton had a hit, two runs and an RBI, while designated hitter Eric Krzysiak and pinch hitter Mario Romero contributed one RBI each.

Vanguard starter Brandon Godfrey struck out four and allowed two hits and two walks in six scoreless innings to improve to 3-0. Pitchers Adrian Mendoza (two innings) and Robert Purpura (one inning) did not allow a hit or a run.

Orange Coast 8, Chaffey 5

COSTA MESA — Left fielder Kris Martin went three for two with two runs batted in for the Pirates in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Right fielder Kevin Cho went two for three with three runs, while designated hitter Scott Stidham and second baseman Sam Michaels had two RBIs each.

Pitcher Andy Abrams earned his first win, after 4 1/3 of work. He struck out two, while allowing three hits and one run and one walk.

COSTA MESA — Brad Hemmerling and Harrison Carroll each finished with nine kills to lead the Pirates on Wednesday to a 30-25, 30-27, 33-31 nonconference sweep, their sixth straight victory.

Paul Leon had 20 assists and Michael Ensign had 17 assists for OCC.

The Pirates play host to L.A. Pierce on Friday at 6 p.m.

LONG BEACH — Carson Clark finished with 15 kills and four service aces Wednesday, but the No. 11-ranked Anteaters fell as No. 9 Long Beach State won, 28-30, 30-20, 30-23, 28-30, 15-12, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.

Kevin Carroll contributed 14 kills and Jordan DuFault had 12 kills for UCI (8-9, 4-8 in MPSF). The Anteaters, the second-best hitting team in the MPSF, hit a season-low .205. UCI is also 0-5 in five-game matches this season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 97, Concordia 70

IRVINE — Bridgette Reyes had 25 points, nine assists, seven steals and six rebounds for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.

Reyes went eight for nine from the field, one for one from three-point range and eight for eight at the free-throw line. Sarah Boyd added 21 points, while Diana Neves had 17 points and Rachel Copeland scored 12 points for Vanguard (20-2, 16-2 in conference), which remains tied in first place with Azusa Pacific.

COSTA MESA — Jordan Malavar and Savannah Garcia each had a hit for the Pirates in an Orange Empire Conference game Wednesday.

OCC (6-8, 1-4 in conference) also got hits from Vanessa Jones and Sarah Munson.

The Pirates play at Santiago Canyon Friday at 2 p.m.

LOS ANGELES — The Anteaters dropped to 7-3 after losing to the No. 7-ranked Bruins Tuesday.
