Grade school buys ‘hands’ for Haiti

February 24, 2010

Students at Kaiser Elementary School in Costa Mesa pooled their money and raised $452.63 in a schoolwide effort to help out earthquake-devastated Haiti.

Between Feb. 8 and 12, nine out of 10 students at Kaiser donated money during the lunch to the “Helping Hands for Haiti” fundraiser, said Emily Barry, student council advisor. “The students would buy a paper hand, for a dollar or more, which they would write their name on and put up on a poster to show they donated,” she said.

“It was something where we just turned on the news and thought wouldn’t it be cool if we did something,” Barry said, referring to the Haiti earthquake coverage on TV. “I think it’s important to show the kids how easy it is to help, that their dollar could immediately go to help someone out.”

The students’ donations were sent to Giving Children Hope. The Buena Park nonprofit organization has provided Haiti with more than 47,000 pounds in relief aid and more than $1 million worth of pharmaceutical medicines, Laura Boss, spokeswoman for Newport-Mesa Unified School District, said in a news release.
