Red-light runner suspected in crash

February 24, 2010

A driver who ran a red light likely caused a four-car crash in Newport Beach on Wednesday that sent three people to the hospital, police said.

Police said a car ran a red light about 8:07 a.m. at Von Karman and Campus Drive and slammed into another vehicle, which started a chain reaction.

The first vehicle that was hit was driven into and, in turn, hit another vehicle, which then hit another car, and that car slammed into a pole on the side of the road, police said.

The crash left a white Cadillac Escalade upside down with firefighters having to rescue the driver. It was not immediately clear which car ran the red light, police said.

Two people from separate cars were taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. Another driver was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. All three people are expected to make full recoveries, police said.
