Costa Mesa police arrested a Newport Beach woman Saturday after she allegedly ran down a New York man in her car while under the influence and fled the scene of the accident in the early hours of the morning.

Shana Lynne Calderon, a 20-year-old waitress from Newport Beach, was being held on $100,000 bail Saturday at the Orange County women’s jail, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Costa Mesa police say the white Ford Explorer Calderon was driving hit a 29-year-old man from Camillus, N.Y., who had just stepped off the curb onto Newport Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Calderon pulled over after the accident and briefly spoke to a witness before fleeing, according to Costa Mesa police.

The victim sustained major head injuries and was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, police said.

Law enforcement officials were withholding the man’s name on Saturday until his family could be contacted.

Calderon turned herself into the Costa Mesa police station a few hours after the accident.

She faces charges of driving under the influence causing injury, hit-and-run with injury and driving without a license.
