Mailbag:

Conservatives are proud of their traditions, but no one likes or respects a crackpot.

When you print a letter like the one from Chuck Cassity (“Great job, Mr. President. Really.” Oct 15), it shows that the crackpot term is still a well-deserved opprobrium.

There is plenty of room for humor in our political discourse, but that letter is not even funny.

There are certainly differences of opinion on whether President Obama should have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, or how he is handling the many issues that divide us these days: the economy, global warming, health coverage, and on down the list.

There is a place for dialogue on these issues, and printing a letter like that does not advance that dialogue.

It is not a credit to the citizens of this county or, for that matter, your newspaper.

We know when reading bloggers that neither they, nor we, have the benefit of the editorial process, but the readers of your newspaper deserve to have that function operate effectively.

Having a letter like that one appear on your pages demonstrates a lapse in the editorial process.

Just to answer the question, this household does not always agree politically, but we are united on this particular issue.
