LA MESA — Newport Harbor High defeated Scripps Ranch, 2-1, in sudden-death penalty strokes to claim the championship of the Helix Tournament Saturday at Helix High. Senior Claire Layton converted the first penalty stroke for the Sailors, for whom junior goalie Sydney King then made a stick save on a Scripps penalty shot to her right to end the match.
Senior Claire Ramser scored in regulation for the Sailors, who won all five of their matches in the tournament, which began Friday.
The Tars defeated Patrick Henry, 4-1, in the semifinals. Also Saturday, Newport defeated Helix, 2-0, and The Bishop’s, 2-0.
Newport opened the tournament Friday with a 6-0 win over Madison High.
“We went down to see how we would do against San Diego schools and we ended up winning the tournament,” Coach Devon Kelly said. “It’s a huge deal.”
