I would imagine that there is some way to get around this red tape, maybe have a nonprofit lease and run the state-owned fairgrounds. This nonprofit could raise money for a new library, acquisition of the Banning Ranch, and fund youth programs that were recently cut.
Equally as beneficial, we keep the fairgrounds the way it is.
Another reason given for selling it would be the money raised to balance the budget. I don’t believe the money raised from its sale would make much of a dent or even a scratch to the current shortcoming.
Finally, if the fairgrounds are going to be sold, Costa Mesa has a legitimate claim to it. To quote a recent commentary written by Mayor Allan Mansoor, “Costa Mesa lost more than $55 million over the last 10 years (prior to 2003) based on shifts, diversions and taking of revenues by the state.”
It would be so wonderful if our city put a lien on that property. Hopefully, that would add enough red tape to scrap the sale. Ideally, we take the fairgrounds and call it even. Everyone benefits, the state eliminates some debit, and Costa Mesa gains a revenue source. The Costa Mesa Fairgrounds has a nice ring to it.
Don’t be shy in letting your elected officials how you feel about this sale, and be sure to ask whether they support or supported this sale.
