After high school, Tom opted to follow in older brother, Bart’s footsteps, and play club volleyball at the University of Arizona, while Kevin followed his love for football to the Big 10 and enrolled at the University of Indiana.
While redshirting his freshman year (practicing but not playing in the games), Kevin became disenchanted with the lifestyle in the Midwest and returned home. He was going to concentrate on academics only until he ran into Orange Coast College men’s volleyball coach, Travis Turner, at a Best Buy store. Travis, in his first season at OCC, had coached Kevin on the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club teams and knew what a positive influence that he would have on his team.
Kevin’s career at Coast was a continuation of his successes athletically. He was twice an all-state performer and was junior college Co-Player of the Year during his second season at Coast when the Pirates played in the state championship match. He shattered all of the hitting records at Coast most of which were held by Brian Lewis, who had a legendary AVP career. Kevin was named OCC Athlete of the Year in 2008.
The opportunity for Kevin to refine his skills at the junior college level was critical in his development and a major factor in his opportunity to play at the college level.
Kevin had planned to continue his volleyball career at USC, but due to the transfer rules, was forced to stay at OCC for one more year. Meanwhile, Kevin has helped Steve Conti with the CdM boys’ volleyball team and this past summer, and assisted with the CdM freshman football team. He also continues to coach with the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club with Rich Polk. Their team won the national championship at last summer’s Junior Olympics.
