Tasteful paintings of sunsets hang on the walls and soft music plays in the halls of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian’s new Imaging Center.

“It feels more like a day spa than a hospital,” said Kristina Mehanna, a radiological clerical supervisor at Hoag. “Patients really like that.”

The new imaging center features new, state-of-the-art MRI and CT scanning equipment.

Hoag celebrated the grand opening of its new Newport Beach health center on Saturday. The event marked the culmination of two years of work to open the new center, said Andrea Winter, a spokeswoman for Hoag.

The new center, at 500-520 Superior Ave., features three converted office buildings that include the new imaging center, Hoag Lung and Esophageal Center, Hoag Voice and Swallowing Center and the Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Center.

UrgiKids, for after-hours urgent pediatric care, also will eventually move from Hoag’s Costa Mesa health center to the new Children’s Hospital of Orange County Specialty Services clinic at the new Newport Beach health center.

The new CHOC center will offer care for children with for diabetes, allergies and heart and intestinal problems, among other issues, said Percival Kane, director of the new Specialty Services clinic.

“We have a lot of patients from Costa Mesa and Newport Beach who travel to our facilities in Orange for treatment, so this center will better serve their needs,” Kane said.

The new health center also is home to Hoag’s Voice and Swallowing Center. The center sees many older patients who have problems with their voice or swallowing because of complications arising from aging, Parkinson’s disease, or a stroke.

The Voice and Swallowing Center is the only one of its kind in Orange County. Many of its patients had to travel to Los Angeles for treatment before it opened about three months ago, said Steven Feinberg, director of the center.

“We have invested in a lot of cutting-edge technology here,” Feinberg said. “We want to establish ourselves as one of the best places for treatment in the country.”
