September 23, 2009

The Corona del Mar Junior Water Polo Program’s 12-and-under boys’ team went undefeated en route to winning the Pacific Fall Classic Tournament Sunday in San Diego.

The squad wasn’t the only team that earned success at the tournament. The CdM 10-and-under co-ed team tied for first place and the boys’ 14-and-under squad went 4-1.

The Eagles improved to 2-1 in their division. They have not gotten off to a hot start in any game this year, and this game was no different starting off with Eagles fumbles on their first three possessions. However, the Eagles defense, led by linebackers Nick Bennett, Bradley Williams and defensive end Ollie Ferris, held steady and did not allow any points following the turnovers.

The Eagles settled down as the first quarter wore on and broke through on their fourth offensive possession with the first of six touchdowns by Justin Young to take a 6-0 lead. Montebello responded by tying the score at 6-6. Then on the Eagles’ next possession the Bulldogs returned a fumble recovery 60 yards for a touchdown to go up 13-6. The Eagles however, had a quick and definitive response as Young took the ensuing kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown sending the Eagles into halftime trailing, 13-12.

In the third quarter, the Eagles quickly took control of the game as they received the opening kickoff and marched the ball down field capping the drive with another rushing touchdown by Young to open a 19-12 margin. From that point they never looked back. The third quarter saw two more touchdowns over 50 yards from Young. In the fourth quarter, Young and Christian Chapin added short touchdown runs.
