People in desperate situations who seek pro-life solutions for their dogs and cats try to avoid the municipal shelters by abandoning their animals, which is against the law and risks a fine in the state of California of up to $500.

Community Animal Network remembers Newport Beach Animal Control picking up 10 cats in carriers that were dropped by a taxicab at the “National Cat Protection Society.” The abandoned cats never entered the rescue facility, as the rule that most businesses follow is to turn over abandoned animals to the city shelter.

PetSmarts and Petcos have trouble with animal abandonment too, and local rescues are called but unable to help as there are not enough people volunteering and donating locally to support the number of animals needing to be rescued.

The pretty torti tabby now called Darla is one of the lucky ones who is being helped by Community Animal Network to find a new home after being left in a Costa Mesa veterinary hospital, where the staff has rallied together to help with the costs of her care until she can find a foster family and move from the boarding kennel.
