SAN DIEGO — Vanguard University won two matches Saturday to improve to 3-1 at the tournament hosted by Point Loma Nazarene.
The Lions defeated Colorado Christian, 25-17, 25-14, 25-18, Saturday night, after having topped Embry-Riddle of Arizona, 25-11, 25-21, 25-14, earlier in the day.
On Friday, Vanguard opened with a 21-25, 25-20, 25-17, 27-25 win over Lee of Tennessee, but then fell, 21-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-21, to Mt. Vernon Nazarene.
Senior outside hitter Kelsey Wirt had 22 combined kills Saturday to lead the Lions. She had 31 combined kills to top the team Friday as well.
Senior Heather DeJongh had 44 combined kills and hit for an impressive percentage as well in the four matches. She hit .448 with 14 kills against Mt. Vernon Nazarene and hit .414 with 15 kills against Lee. She hit .636 with eight kills against Colorado Christian and hit .500 against Embry-Riddle.

LOS ANGELES — Sophomore Brett Berman scored off a corner kick as the visiting Anteaters scored first in the exhibition match Saturday.
Both coaches elected to play only one 10-minute overtime.
UCI sophomore Andrew Fontein had six saves for UCI, ranked No. 14.
UCLA is ranked No. 9.
UCI opens its season Tuesday at Santa Clara.
