Pot, LSD seized at DUI checkpoint

Police found more than drunk drivers at their DUI checkpoint in Costa Mesa on Wednesday night, when officers said they found one man with a backpack full of marijuana and tabs of LSD inside his car.

Patrick Dylan Riley, 23, of Costa Mesa was arrested on suspicion of possessing and transporting narcotics and possessing with intent to sell marijuana, said Lt. Mark Manley.

Riley was stopped about 10:25 p.m. at a DUI checkpoint police set up at Wilson Street and Pomona Avenue when police caught a whiff of weed emanating from his car, Manley said.

Officers searched his car and found a backpack with 41 grams of marijuana inside, along with a digital scale to weigh it and a ledger that appeared to list his sales records, Manley said. Police also found nearly five tabs of LSD, or acid, he said.

Riley was one of only two arrests at the checkpoint. One other person was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, and a dozen were given tickets for various violations, including driving without a license.

Police stopped 237 vehicles in the checkpoint and ended up impounding seven cars.

Another checkpoint is scheduled for Tuesday.
