Mailbag:

Paul Anderson states, incorrectly, that the joining of Glenn Tipton to Judas Priest introduced a twin lead guitar that, up to that point, had never been done (“Holding up the heavy metal altar,” Tuesday).

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The fact is, Wishbone Ash, behind Ted Turner and Andy Powell, gave birth to the innovation of twin-lead guitars back in the ’60s, and the Allman Brothers Band popularized it. Judas Priest is only one of several bands that have effectively used that style to signature results, after the previously mentioned pioneering bands.

Credit should now be extended where it is due as a fair — and accurate — truth.

Pilot is a treasure ?to the community

I totally agree with the sentiments expressed in Geoff West’s letter in the Aug. 1 Daily Pilot (“Readers do appreciate the Pilot,” Sounding Off). I have subscribed to the Los Angeles Times for years and always read the Daily Pilot first.

JWA was not meant to be commercial

Regarding “Study: Is air traffic bad for health?” Friday:

I own a business on Balboa Island where we install tile and other flooring. Let a bit of dirty water run down the alley from us or anyone else, and Hazmat is there right away. With clean-up and with a huge fine! Because all the alleys and streets drain to the bay. And the bay should not have any pollutants dumped in it.

Yet the airplanes are allowed to dump pollutants on an hourly and daily basis — on the same route — over and over. John Wayne was never meant to be a commercial airport — and this is one of the prime reasons. We need an alternative.
