Davises’ dynasty rolls on

NEWPORT BEACH — Eight was not enough for the father-son doubles team of Gordon and Scott Davis, who won their ninth straight national senior hardcourt championship Sunday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

The top-seeded Davises, including Scott, a Corona del Mar resident and an NBTC pro, defeated Carl and John Erickson, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, in the final to claim their fifth straight title in the super senior division (fathers ages 70 to 79).

Gordon, of Encino, had teamed with his son to win the senior division (fathers ages 60 to 69) from 2000 to 2003. They missed the 2004 event.

In the senior division final, Costa Mesa residents Devin and Bart Bowen were edged, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, by Nathan and Cliff Price from Tulsa, Okla.

Newport Beach resident Michael Carter and partner Allan Carter from Boca Raton, Fla. won the senior division consolation final with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over 1989 French Open singles champion Michael Chang and his father, Joe.

In the super senior consolation final, Newport Beach resident Eric Quade and partner Stanley Quade were bested, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2), by Alan and Robert Croll of Beverly Hills.

Scott Davis and partner David Pate won the 1991 Australian Open doubles title.
