UCI’s Collins ninth

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — UC Irvine junior Lauren Collins finished ninth in the high jump finals Friday at the NCAA Track & Field Championships at McDonnell Field.

Collins, the 2009 Big West Conference champion, cleared 5 feet, 10 3/4 inches to place ninth of the 15 jumpers who advanced out of Wednesday’s preliminaries. Destinee Hooker of Texas won the high jump with a mark of 6-4 3/4 .

Ross, Fuerbringer claim silver

Newport Harbor High product April Ross and former Estancia High standout Matt Fuerbringer earned second-place finishes in their respective Federation Internationale de Volleyball beach tournaments completed on May 31.

Ross and partner Jen Kessy fell to Brazilians Talita Antunes and Maria Antonelli, 22-20, 21-16, in the women’s Seoul Open final in South Korea.

Fuerbringer and his partner, Casey Jennings, were also bested by a pair of Brazilians in the men’s Myslowice Open title match in Poland. The Americans fell, 25-23, 21-17, to Alison Cerutti and Harley Marques.

Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and partner Sean Rosenthal, a Corona del Mar resident, finished third in the same men’s event.

Ross and Kessy were the No. 1 seeded team. The Brazilians were seeded No. 4.

Ross and Kessy shared $21,000 after reaching the final for the fifth straight World Tour event.
