Authorities have identified Douglas Smith Jr. as the driver who lost control of his silver Toyota Corolla on Placentia Avenue in Costa Mesa and fatally struck a cinder block wall Sunday night.
Police said Smith, 49, of Costa Mesa, was speeding northbound on Placentia Avenue about 10:30 p.m. Sunday toward Estancia High School when he failed to follow the street as it curved left and instead jumped a curb, went over a fire station lawn and directly into a block wall. Witnesses reported seeing Smith pass vehicles, and driving on the wrong side of the road before the crash, police said.
Authorities said he was not wearing his seat belt and was killed instantly when he hit the wall. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, police said. A toxicology report from the Orange County Sheriff Coroner is pending.
