Newport’s Pinkney wins CIF diving championship

WALNUT — Newport Harbor High sophomore Clay Pinckney won the CIF Southern Section Division I individual title in boys’ diving at Mt. San Antonio College Tuesday.

Coach Jason Lynch said Pinckney’s accomplishment might be a first for a Sailor diver.

Lynch said Pinckney, the Sunset League Diver of the Year, scored a 496, 12 points better than the nearest competitor.

The CIF Southern Section Division I preliminaries in other swimming events begins today at Mt. SAC at noon.

The section moved the prelims to Mt. SAC, an outside pool, after problems with the pump system at the Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

COSTA MESA — Danny O’Neil and Ely Zaidler swept in doubles for the Eagles, who lost in the wild-card round of the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs Tuesday at Estancia.

Estancia’s Kevin Thomas won twice in singles.

BASEBALL

San Juan Hills 3

CORONA DEL MAR — The Sea Kings had already wrapped up second place in the Pacific Coast League, but that didn’t mean they were done with playing the regular season.

Senior Michael Bloom knocked a walk-off RBI single with the bases loaded to give CdM (14-10, 10-4 in league) the PCL victory Tuesday at CdM. Bloom’s single scored sophomore Mitch Gardener, who led off the seventh inning with a walk.

Senior Danny Moskovits collected his 37th RBI of the season, which broke the CdM single-season record set by Ty Harper in 1999. Bloom has 32 this season.

Freshman pitcher Andrew McCormack (3-2) struck out four and had no walks in his complete-game performance. Senior Mitch Sands homered, part of the Corona del Mar’s six hits.

The Sea Kings will play at San Juan Hills Thursday at 3:15 p.m. in the regular-season finale.

Fountain Valley 5

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Cody Green supplied the dramatics for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

Green hit a walk-off RBI single with two outs and two strikes for the victory. His hit scored junior Kyle Cablay, who singled to reach base. He was moved over to second after a sacrifice by senior Alex Rios.

Junior Dillan Freiberg’s single tied the score, 5-5, in the sixth inning. Freiberg’s hit scored Green, who led of the sixth with a single. Junior Dan Hurley’s sacrifice bunt moved Green to second.
