Fundraisers support groups

The Harbor Mesa Lions donated funds of more than $20,000 to various organizations in the community at a recent meeting. Twenty-eight representatives of these organizations were presented checks by President Gina Stansbury and Treasurer Eileen Jensen. The club raised money with a casino night, spaghetti dinner, bingo, by selling candy and ice cream, and having a garage sale.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

A number of congregations will celebrate the National Day of Prayer on May 7, but the Newport-Mesa- Irvine Interfaith Council will be offering one of the few events that will bring together clergy and members of more than 35 faith communities according to the Rev. Julie Elkins, council president and pastor at First United Methodist Church of Costa Mesa.

Rabbi Mark S. Miller of Temple Bat Yahm will be the 2009 Keynote Speaker at the council’s 12th annual National Day of Prayer Breakfast and will be joined by other honored representatives from local government and our Interfaith religious communities including Christian, Muslim and Baha’i representatives who will lead prayers dedicated to our community, state, country and the world.

Rabbi Miller was the keynote speaker at the council’s second National Day of Prayer, according to Lane Calvert, a Baha’i and event co-chairman.

The breakfast is at the Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club. The doors will open at 6:45 a.m., breakfast served at 7:10 a.m. with adjournment by 8:45 a.m., according to the Rev. David Stoner, event co-chairman and assistant pastor at First United Methodist Church of Costa Mesa.

HALL OF FAME LUNCHEON

The first nomination has come in from a service club for the Daily Pilot’s Community and Clubs Hall of Fame Luncheon May 29 at American Legion Post 291.

ROTARIANS AT WORK SATURDAY

Local Rotarians will join with thousands of Rotarians around the United States on Saturday for Rotarians at Work.

In Costa Mesa, the Rotary Club is sponsoring School Dental Exams, according to Don Gregg, club president. The free exams for elementary school children will be given at Rae Center from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. by dentists who are donating their time.
