When Corona del Mar High and Newport Harbor compete against each other in boys’ golf bragging rights aren’t the only reward on the line.
The teams also play for the Pelican Cup. And for the past two years, Newport Harbor has had ownership of the Cup. The Sailors have also had the right to brag.
But the Sea Kings are hoping to change that today when the teams meet at Pelican Hill Golf Course. They tee off at 1 p.m., competing to see who will be the best after 18 holes on the par-72 course.
“They beaten us the last two years,” CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said. “I’m hoping it’s a lot closer and we can beat them this time.”
In 2007, the match was very close with Newport Harbor winning back the Pelican Cup, 193-195.
Last year, the Battle of the Bay boys’ golf match was moved to Pelican Hill for the first time since the course had been shut down for two years for renovation. The teams played an 18-hole format, as opposed to the nine-hole matches held on two separate days.
Newport Harbor held on to the Pelican Cup last year after a 394-410 win.
This year has the makings of being a tight match. Both teams have been playing fairly well recently.
CdM is 10-1, and 5-0 in the Pacific Coast League.
Newport Harbor is 10-3-1, 3-1 in the Sunset League.
