Does it make sense for the Orange County Fair Board to convert the equestrian center into a parking lot?

It’s hard to say until we get more details. Compelling arguments on both sides have started to develop since the fair’s chief executive, Steve Beazley, mentioned it in a meeting with Daily Pilot editors.

Beazley and Fair Board President Julie Vandermost signaled they would like to carefully consider the issue, and we encourage that. Both deserve praise for being so forthright on an issue that’s certain to upset some.

The next step is to consider starting an analysis of the benefits and drawbacks. One of those negatives include the displacement of the 7.5-acre center that stables about 160 horses and serves as a training ground for equestrians from mostly Newport-Mesa and Irvine. Many of those horse owners and trainers say they won’t have an alternative to turn to if the center is shut down. And some doubt the fair needs to grow.

But Beazley pointed out that one study showed it would cost about $53 million to build a parking garage for 2,000 spaces, while it would cost only about $2 million to use the equestrian grounds. That kind of math speaks for itself.

But there’s more than just dollars to calculate here. There’s heritage and a community to consider.

And, of course, what will the neighbors think?
