Regarding a recent editorial about the Costa Mesa Senior Center (“Perhaps a new liaison is needed,” Dec. 14), the Costa Mesa Senior Center is without a doubt the most warm and welcoming of the five senior centers in Orange County I have visited.

I have worked as a volunteer there for 11 years, taking lessons in cooking, computer, dancing, 55 alive, played Scrabble and bridge, all these by time donated by volunteers. I am presently enjoying a play-reading class.

Our director, Aviva Goelman, came in with 44 classes offered, and has doubled that, putting an emphasis on fundraising as we are only one-third supported by the city. Goelman is always available to the seniors and is doing a superb job.

Fining for not watering is ridiculous

Thank you for the article about the fine Kevin Doane had to pay because of his dead lawn (“Paying fines for his day in court,” Jan. 10).

All other issues about Doane aside, it’s ludicrous for the city of Costa Mesa to fine anyone for not watering his or her lawn.

Is our City Council not in touch with the fact that California is facing the most significant water crisis in its history?

Do they know we’re in a drought? Do they realize we live in the chaparral — a coastal desert?

How about the fact that our governor directed state agencies to immediately address the drought conditions and the fact that our water supply has already been cut by 20% to 30%?

Anyone there ever heard of climate change? It’s impacting California’s water resources. How does the council feel about the way we are draining the lakes and rivers in California, Nevada and Arizona?

Are we really going to care what our lawns look like when we are restricted to a limited number of hours every day when we can actually turn on our water?

That time is coming, especially if we don’t start some serious conservation efforts now.

Perhaps the city should have encouraged Doane to take his limited funds and purchase some drought resistant grasses, succulents and cacti — it’s called xeriscaping.

It almost seems our council is not willing to face the stark reality of the water shortage we’re facing.

There is a mountain of facts, statistics and tips out there on drought and water conservation.

I encourage all parties involved to do their homework.
