Over 100 Artists from Southern California Plein Air Painters Association Participated
(Newport Beach, CA) - The popular plein air competition at the Balboa Peninsula included a week long Paint Out from September 7 to September 11, 2008 around the Balboa Peninsula, a two-hour Quick Draw on September 12 at the historic Balboa Fun Zone, and a weekend Fine Art Show and Sale in front of the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum. Two local well-known artists juried the shows for the week-long Paint Out and Quick Draw competion: Cynthia Britain juried the Paint Out, and Michael Obermeyer juried the Quick Draw.
The event was highlighted at the reception on Friday evening, September 12, when awards were presented to the following artists: First Place Award to Jack Wang for "Morning Pier", Second Place Award to Richard Rice for "Bluewater Docking", Third Place Award to Greg LaRock for "Can Light", Artist Choice Award to Michael Situ for "Newport Harbor", Honorable Mention awards to Steve Wang for "Peninsula Sunset", Alan Nowell for "The Crab Cooker", Janine Salzman for "Sunset Magic", Terry Reay for "Before Noon", and Greg LaRock for "Blackies at 10 (AM)". In the Quick Draw juried show, the First Place award went to Kirsten Anderson for "Ferris Wheel Festivity", Second Place award to Michael Situ for "Ready to Sail", Third Place award to Kevin Davidson for "Tug in the Bay", and Honorable Mention awards to Richard Rice for "In the Zone", Alfred Tse for "Bob's Having Coffee", and Liz Reday for "Belle & Queen". The competition was stiff, with many fine artists vying for the awards. The judges definitely had a challenge choosing what they considered were the best paintings.
