On the yellow brick road to funds

They call themselves “The Friends of Dorothy.”

They are a guild of local citizens working to support the AIDS Services Foundation of Orange County, and Dorothy’s pals held their second annual Tupperware party Sept. 10 and raised some $12,000.

That’s a lot of plastic containers. For those unfamiliar, Friends of Dorothy is thought to refer to Dorothy Gale, from “The Wizard of OZ,” played by Judy Garland.

The gay community, mobilized in the fight against AIDS, chose the reference to Dorothy, inasmuch as the question, “Are you a friend of Dorothy?” had been a disguised manner in which the gay community identified a member since World War II.

Coming up Oct. 25, The Friends of Dorothy, composed of both straights and gays, will throw its “Haunted Halloween” Costume Bash at The Village Crean in Newport Beach followed by a Dec. 3 holiday event group members are calling “Bells, Balls and Billiards,” set to unfold at The Shark Club, Costa Mesa. Newport’s glamorous couple Reed and Rita Sprinkel celebrated their 30th anniversary with a warm and intimate dinner for some 100 close friends and family members in The Grill Room at The Balboa Bay Club & Resort.

A classic Caesar salad and grilled filet mignon was served to guests including Big Canyon’s elegant Barbara Bowie and husband Alex Bowie, Marit and Jonas Store, movie star Kathy and Jerry Thompson of China Cove, Jane and Glenn Nordstrom, Gerda and Don Juizingh, Julie and Ted Holt, the beautiful blonde Loretta Haugen — always best dressed — and Astrid and Kristen Bergford. A special anniversary toast was made by Newport celeb Pilar Wayne Upchurch.

It’s Mighty Rubber Ducky season, and on Oct. 5, some 15,000 rubber duckies will race to the finish line at Wild Rivers. It’s the 15th annual Mighty Rubber Ducky Derby on behalf of The Children’s Bureau of Orange County, a child protective agency. Chaired by Peggy Goldwater Clay, Lisa Fujimoto and Ron Dominguez, the day at the water park attracts thousands of fun seekers.
