This guy doesn’t come to drink

Newport Beach Detective Bryan Moore has a specific task over the next year: inspecting every alcohol-serving location in town.

And you thought you knew what it was to go bar-hopping.

Detective Bryan Moore has you beat.

As the Newport Beach Police Department’s Alcohol Beverage Control department liaison, detective Moore has the monumental task of hitting every upscale restaurant, trendy 20-something party spot and dimly-lit dive bar in Newport Beach by July of next year if they have a permit to serve alcohol. Add in another 60 off-sale establishments — liquor stores and the like — and Moore will be visiting 400 locations by June 30, 2009.

No, Moore is not sampling drinks. Instead, as the police department’s go-to guy for making sure the city’s alcohol establishments are up to code, he visits a few each day and inspects them for various Department of Alcohol Beverage Control violations, or ABC violations.

“I figure I’ve got to hit about 10 a week,” Moore said.

Moore planned on hitting Sharkeez and a few other popular spots by Newport Pier this afternoon.

A longer profile of Moore and his beat will follow.
